It might be interesting taking an anthropology class, but just wait until its time to declare a major.
On Sept. 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. near the Chemistry Building on Western Michigan University’s main campus, the College of Arts and Sciences will be hosting their third annual Major Excitement to help undecided first-year and second-year college students choose their major and minor.
“While the event is geared toward freshmen, it is also for students who haven’t quite figured out what they want to do yet, and it helps them make decisions now and for their careers later down the road,” said Kevin Knutson, the director of Arts and Sciences Advising.
Major Excitement is geared toward helping students become aware of what is offered at WMU and what classes are required of certain majors and minors.
The First Year Seminar [FYS] program works closely with Major Excitement to get incoming freshmen adjusted and acclimated to the university. FYS also serves to bring faculty and students closer together and promote a better learning environment for everyone involved.
“The major change is that it’s growing,” said Knutson.
“We had one or two colleges in the beginning of Major Excitement now, all except one or two are participating in the event. [Academic colleges] come to show students what they have to offer and inform them about what is involved with choosing a major/minor.”
Over 50 academic departments will be in attendance Wednesday and there will be music, games, prizes, and giveaways. There will be a grand prize drawing for any student who visits six information stations and gets their Major Excitement “M.E.” Passport stamped.
