The dual use cell phone tower on the corner of Howard Street and Valley road is half way used as of Tuesday, when the largest flag in the history of Western Michigan University was raised by President John Dunn and students from the College of Engineering and the Western Student Association.

“This is going in the Western Guinness Book of Records,” Peter Strazdas, WMU associate vice president of Facilities Management, said. The flag, 20 by 25 feet, is the largest in the history of the university.

Traffic was held up as the group carried the flag across Valley Road from the neighboring hill.

Western Michigan University’s Board of Trustees agreed on a five-year lease agreement with MetroPCS Michigan Inc. in June to improve cell phone reception on campus. MetroPCS constructed the 160-foot tower in October.

The ceremony came hours before WMU’s football team was to play Ball State University on ESPN-2.
