You make many valid and interesting points. Can you e-mail me at koty.m.neelis@wmich.edu? I'd love to talk to you sometime in person about some of your ideas. Thanks.

Wow, thank you David for telling college women what we want to read. I understand the topics of dating, campus cuties, etc might seem completely vapid to you but these are topics college women DO want to read about. I think it's fun to see what hot guys are on campus or read about dating advice from other girls my age. These topics are relatable to us and we find it interesting, at least I do! I understand you're trying to stick up for the women by telling us what we want to read but you're being incredibly sexist. And for the record women's magazines DO feature issues like business and politics and career issues. Obviously you wouldn't know that because I doubt you skim through Marie Claire on a monthly basis. Obviously the purpose of this magazine is to have a fun outlet for WOMEN on campus to read, articles they would find in Cosmo or Marie Claire but that is localized to WMU. I think this magazine is pretty cool. But that's just my opinion. I mean, after all, I'm just a woman who needs to be told by a man what types of articles I should be reading.

Oh and can I please say something? This site has been up for like what TWO DAYS? COME ON. How can we judge it by a few days of content?

I support this RSO and this magazine. I think it's awesome someone on campus decided to do something different and bring a unique website to the girls of WMU. I like that now we have something else to read besides the Herald. (no offense, love ya Herald)

I understand, David, that you think you're sticking up for us women as a society by telling us what type of articles should be provided for us but you're being incredibly sexist. College women want to read about issues that are important to US, not to you, not to men. Maybe it seems like garbage to read about dating issues, fashion, etc etc but these are issues that are related to us as COLLEGE WOMEN. We WANT to hear about what other girls on campus think about the same issues we're dealing with.

You don't need to give Her Campus WMU a chance. This magazine is specifically for women of WMU. Like she said, if women want other stories they can either join the RSO or email her with suggestions to change. Not some jerk who's on a crusade looking for an unpaid staff to devote even more hours and time to research because some guy wants the magazine to feature content important to him. Give the staff a break. If they're creating the content and doing stories that interest them and the women of WMU then so be it, it's what THEY are interested in. From my understanding it's called Her Campus WMU because it's about the women of WMU. Not interviewing and profiling random 'strong powerful women' that have no ties to campus. Featuring a female dominated RSO that raised over 3000 is awesome to give them recognition. What kind of strong powerful women are you looking for? These ARE the women on campus. Women LIKE reading about dating tips. It's not important to you because you're a guy. My friends and I like the website so far and we LIKE that the magazine offers a dating section specific to WMU, it's worthwhile to US. Get off your high horse.

I understand that Her Campus WMU is not meant for hard hitting journalism. My issue is that there's nothing else out there for women. Where is a magazine about women's issues in politics? Business? Real issues that women are facing? Why is it that every women's magazine doesn't actually go for intelligent women, instead of talking about dating and campus cuties? I also get that there are certain things you're requried to put in there Koty, but why is it that none of the stories as is are real journalism? It's all fluff. I'm willing to give Her Campus a chance, but I don't have much to believe in it - all I can see is a magazine that's going to cater to the predetermined space that women are 'supposed' to occupy.

As far as men's magazines such as GQ and Maxim, those are just as bad and that's a valid complaint. But the fact is that their audience, straight white men, are not an oppressed class - and women are. That makes what speaks to them and tells them how they act even more important. Our media informs how we behave, and if the only magazines out there for women are lifestyle / fashion magazines, then that sets a way for women to behave.

Koty, I'm not asking you to start a revolution or change the magazine industry - that's too monumental of a task to even consider. But I am asking you to make sure that the articles posted on Her Campus are worthwhile pieces - not random dating tips. Talk about women in their careers, interview strong powerful women, and talk about the ways that women fit into this world and how they rebel. Make Her Campus WMU something that really matters and makes a difference in a small way. Yeah, there's going to be fluff - but make sure that the fluff surrounds something substantial.

I think it's interesting. If there was HIS campus WMU - and was anything like typical men's magazines, they would feature the same stuff!! Open up your GQ, your Maxim...what's in there: hot girls, cooking tips, fashion advice, articles on electronics....just as "frilly" as a women's magazine if you ask me.

The WMU Chapter of Her Campus is required to have certain sections of the website, including the Campus Cutie, due to the requirements set by the Harvard founders. We pitch story ideas based on the limitations we are given recognizing the sections we are required to have but also have asked to create other sections of the online magazine as well, like the career section.

Our purpose is not to provide investigative, hard hitting journalism...that has never been the focus of women's interest magazines, that is the focus of news magazines and newspapers.

Women's interest magazines focus on lifestyle/fashion/etc because that is what generally interests women. Women's interest magazines like Marie Claire do offer investigative pieces on a monthly basis. Sure, the WMU chapter would love to do something like that but that doesn't serve the purpose of the magazine set by the creators. If someone wants to read a hard news piece they should turn to the Western Herald. Unfortunately there isn't a women's magazine in the industry that provides in depth journalistic pieces on more serious topics. So when you're telling us we should be providing more hard hitting news features you're asking us to change the magazine industry altogether. Maybe the idea that women only want to read about dating tips, career advice, soft news features, personal profiles, etc is a standard set by society but we aren't here to start a revolution.

Since we are an RSO all of our writers provide their content for free, at their own will. We have no funding, no office, and work on our articles in between juggling heavy course loads, other RSO involvement, and jobs. Our writers are choosing to write articles they are interested in and they work hard. We are just lucky that the founding members from Harvard even brought Her Campus to WMU to provide our students with a different writing opportunity on campus other than the Herald.

We're only on our first week of publication and still have a long way to go. We are building this from the ground up and we're giving it our best shot. If people think there should be changes they should do something about it -- join our RSO and make the difference you believe there should be.

I don't understand why THIS is what's put out there for college-aged women. The fact that the majority of news services available to women focus on lifestyle / fashion and can't focus on anything else disgusts me. Why is there a Campus Cutie section on a site that's supposed to be include the best female journalism around? Do something hard-hitting. Be a journalist, and prove people wrong that all women want is frilly lifestyle pieces on ten ways to please your man.
