Greek Life an option for incoming students

Almost every United States president and vice president born since the first social fraternity was founded in 1825 has been members of a fraternity.
As classes begin, fraternities and sororities will begin recruiting and rushing new brothers and sisters.
Fraternities
For men, recruitment is very informal. Fraternities recruit their own members individually and can recruit new members all year long.
Fraternities rush both fall and spring semesters and there are no requirements to join.
Members can also invite new members to go to events and hang out with the chapter by individual house and recruit them.
Rushing in a fraternity begins with an informational night hosted by the Interfraternity Council.
Future brothers will visit as many houses as they please and if both the chapter and the perspective member hit it off, a bid is extended to them by the fraternity men offering them a chance to join that house.
“We really encourage any and everyone to join, or at least consider joining,” IFC President River Karaba said.
Prospective members can find out more information on IFC recruitment and chapter houses at Bronco Bash or by visiting www.wmich.edu/greeks and are encouraged to attend Greek Carnival during Fall Welcome.
Sororities
Formal Sorority Recruitment kicks off Sept. 20 and a $25 fee is required to participate and will continue from Sept. 22 until the 26th.
The recruitment will be held at 9 p.m. in room 208 of the Bernhard Center and allow women to get together in a group setting to become more informed on Greek Life and recruitment.
This is a five-day process where women will be able to visit and revisit each sorority on Western Michigan University’s campus.
“The girls will learn about each sorority’s sisterhood, community services, philanthropic events, social events and much more in determination of where they would like to revisit the next day,” vice president of recruitment Lauren Hanna said.
Any woman that is a full-time student at WMU is eligible to participate in Greek Life recruitment.
Prospective sorority sisters can register for recruitment and find more information at www.wmich.edu/greeks and by becoming fans of WMU Sorority Recruitment 2010 on Facebook.
“I have posted information about each of the four stages of recruitment, some facts about each chapter house and recruitment that the interested women may need to know, why going Greek is an amazing experience and the steps to register,” Hanna said.
“I continually update this fan page with specific dates and times of upcoming recruitment events.”
There is also information for parents on the Greek Life website that informs them of hazing procedures and guidelines, as well as information on pricing and history of chapter houses.
