Western Michigan University’s Department of Geography and the Gamma Theta Upsilon honor society will be hosting the first ever Amazing GeoRace on Friday, Nov. 20 from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. as part of the National Geography Awareness Week. The event challenges teams to navigate their way across campus and accomplish various objectives in the fastest possible time.
Each team will be comprised of two students, and while early registration is not required, interested students are encouraged to sign up in order to guarantee a spot in the race.
“The objective of the GeoRace is to highlight some of the rich history and geography of our campus, while raising awareness of the [geography] department and its many strengths” said Stephen Cameron, a faculty member at the Department of Geography.
Prizes will be awarded to the top teams, and include a pair of GPS units for the first place winners, $25 gift certificates for second place, and geography T-shirts for third place.
Students not participating in the race are invited to visit stations in the Bernhard Center, Student Recreation Center, and Wood Hall where they can enter to win prizes such as WMU gear and gift cards by correctly answering geographic questions.
Other events throughout the week include a geography bee on Tuesday, Nov. 17 from 4 to 6 p.m. in room 209 of the Bernhard Center, a department open house on the second floor of Wood Hall Wednesday afternoon, and a geography department colloquium from 3 to 4 p.m. in room 2078 of Wood Hall, Friday, Nov. 20.
Students can register and obtain more information regarding the events by following The Amazing GeoRace 2009 on Facebook or by contacting Steven Cameron at stephen.camercon@wmich.edu.
