Engineering students at Western Michigan University are being recognized this week in a series of social events, fundraisers, and dinners during Engineers Week.
Every year, the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has hosted a dinner for students, but this year, the student leadership council asked if they could do more, said Scott Conant, student outreach and recruitment coordinator in the engineering college.
“It’s the middle of winter and students have been working hard since August,” Conant said. “We want them to break out of it for a little bit.”
This year’s events will include a quarter roll competition through the halls of the engineering building, a Honduras fundraising dinner, and a dodgeball competition.
Conant said that the events at WMU are part of a nation-wide celebration to bring recognition to engineers and how their work affects the daily lives of people.
The keynote speaker at Tuesday’s dinner will be Justin Eric Sutton, founder and managing partner of Interstate Traveler Co. LLC., a group that is designing an inexpensive high-speed magnetic rail system, known as Maglev, that can be built on various terrains.
