Western HeraldOn Monday, Nov. 2nd at 7pm, Sunil Joy from Direct Action Research Training (DART) Center will be conducting an information session in the Wesley Foundation for people interested in community organizing.
The DART Center launched the Organizers Institute in 2001 to create a field school to generate a new league of professional community organizers with the skills and commitment to bring about large scale social and economic justice.
“After eight years of research into best practices, experimentation, evaluation, and refinement, the Organizers Institute has fulfilled its original promise and has become the most effective approach to the development of great community organizers in the country,” Sunil said.
Communities across the country are feeling the bite of recession on issues like healthcare, education, employment, and housing.
“Low and moderate income communities are in need of passionate and talented individuals with the dedication and skills necessary to transform communities,” Sunil said.
“Now is the time to stand up for social and economic justice.”
Individuals interested in becoming organizer trainees should preferably be master’s graduates and have professional organizing experience, but undergraduates can also be enrolled.
Also, one must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. Applications for the 2010 DART organizer institute are due by Dec. 15.
Each spring, DART hires 15 to 20 Organizer Trainees to begin training in mid-July.
Training starts with an intensive seven-day classroom orientation led by experienced organizers from across the country.
Immediately after the seven-day classroom orientation, Organizer Trainees will continue with a four-month infield training to develop their skills by working at one of their 21 affiliated organizations.
All expenses are paid for by DART.
