The Western Michigan University College Democrats welcomed Kalamazoo County Drain Commissioner candidate Pat Crowley to their Oct. 6 meeting in room 212 of the Bernhard Center.
Crowley, who has a master’s degree in water resource management, a Ph.D. in soil and water physic, and 25 years of experience in the field, believes Kalamazoo County has never had a Drain Commissioner with adequate knowledge and experience to deal with the management of Kalamazoo’s numerous lakes, ponds, and rivers.
“We’ve already spent $30 million trying to clean polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) out of the Kalamazoo River,” Crowley said. “It’s much less expensive to prevent and maintain, as opposed to repairing once the damage has been done.”
Crowley attended the College Democrats meeting to alert students about her position in the upcoming election and gain some interested voters.
The College Democrats are planning an elections result marathon with the Students for Barack Obama, who have also expressed interest in the activity. Details about this activity will be discussed at a later meeting.
Also on a future agenda, students proposed the idea of designing signs to put up to urge voters to focus on local candidates such as Crowley.
On the future agenda, the WMU College Democrats are hoping to have U.S. Sen. Carl Levin return to campus in the near future to speak on current issues facing the country. Levin spoke in March earlier this year, focusing on the war in Iraq and the Democratic primaries.
