The Western Michigan University community will have a chance to hear from Kalamazoo City Commission candidates in a forum Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fetzer Center.
The 90-minute forum, hosted by the Western Student Association and the WMU Institute for Government and Politics, is set to include all 17 candidates and will be moderated by WMUK anchor Gordon Evans.
“It is really important for WMU students to know what is going on in Kalamazoo,” Justine Horton, public relations chair for the WSA, said. “Whoever will get elected will have an impact on students’ lives.”
The forum will begin with a general question to all the candidates. Questions from the WSA and Institute for Government and Politics will be asked on issues such as sustainability, the downtown arena, and the non-discrimination ordinance, Horton said.
“Being on campus, [the forum] will be geared towards students,” Horton said.
Audience members will be able to submit questions to the candidates on note cards.
Candidates are running for seven seats on the city council Nov. 3. The candidate who receives the most votes will be mayor of Kalamazoo.
