Business students looking for work and networking opportunities will get a chance today.
The Business Career Day, sponsored by Alpha Kappa Psi and the Haworth College of Business, will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. today in the East Ballroom of the Bernhard Center.
Representatives from 100 Midwest companies, many who are WMU alumni, will be on-hand to meet and talk with students.
“All the alumni will have badges saying ‘WMU alum’ so it’s a great way to break the ice,” said Linda Ickes, Haworth College of Business Career Center director. “People hire people they know. That can open a lot of doors, maybe not tomorrow, but that contact could come in handy months down the road.”
Around 120 employers attended last year, but a nation-wide decline, that Ickes expected, caused the numbers to be lower this year. However, WMU did get 100 employers to attend this year’s event.
“Some employers have really had a dip and they’ve changed recruiting methods,” Ickes said. “So that doesn’t worry me, because we’ll have better quality recruiting this year.”
Students attending should dress professionally and bring copies of their resúmés. The event is free and the public is invited.
Some employers will return Friday for on-campus interviews with select candidates, either in the Haworth College of Business Career Center or the Bernhard Center.
Brandan McBride, Business Career Day co-director, hopes both students and employers benefit from the event.
“I hope that employers and students have a great time, gain skills they can use in the future, let students get a feeling for what jobs are out there, and let employers see all the potential candidates at WMU,” McBride said.
