The Western Michigan University and Central Michigan University Red Cross blood drive has been going on for the last week to help raise blood levels in Michigan Hospitals and will finish tomorrow at Miller Auditorium, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Janelle Fraley, a sophomore in dietetics, was volunteering at the snacks table during the blood drive at Siedschlag Hall.
“I like to help people, I was asked to volunteer and I figured it would be good to help. I volunteered in high school a lot, so I wanted to in college,” Fraley said.
Her job was to hand out juice and snacks to the blood donors and make sure no one passed out after donating.
A fifth-time donor, Julia Selwa, a freshman secondary education major, donated at Siedschlag Hall on Monday.
“Red Cross called me, and when they call me I’ll donate blood. But otherwise I’ll usually forget,” Selwa said.
So far a total 321 units have been collected by WMU from six of the nine blood drives. CMU has collect 154 units from four blood drives and they have four more drives left. Bringing the total so far up to 475 units, which has the potential to save 1,425 lives.
People who donated were given food and drink, including Nutter Butters, cookies, M&M’s, juice, water, and read fun facts about blood and blood donation. Everyone who donated blood was entered into a raffle to win a host of prizes like an iPod, television, or a Nintendo Wii gaming system.
