Author Thomas Mullen will be at Western Michigan University Wednesday, Sept. 2, as part of the Lee Honors College’s Fall Welcome program.
Mullen will be addressing the challenges of writing his first novel, The Last Town on Earth. Students are encouraged to ask questions concerning literature, publishing, and writing.
Mullen’s novel, which was named Best Debut Novel of 2006 by USA Today, involves a small town in northern Washington that quarantined itself during the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918. At the same time, the country was amidst an entrance into WWI and labor unrest.
“We feel the book is very relevant to what is happening in our country right now and we have several events planned for our students to explore those issues,” said LHC advisor Sue Oole.
Mullen will be doing a book signing following the presentation. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the WMU Bookstore and after the reading. The event takes place from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Chemistry Building on the WMU campus.
