Students looking for an opportunity to boost their resumes, make some extra cash or meet new people may be interested in applying to be a Bronco Bash or Homecoming student coordinator for the 2009-10 school year.
These student coordinator positions give Western Michigan University students valuable leadership experience, as well as the opportunity to experience a new side of campus life.
These paid positions require a time commitment from April to October for approximately 15 hours per week.
The student coordinator will assist with the development of the theme, coordinate weekly schedules of events, brainstorm marketing and promotional ideas and help with overall planning.
“Working as a student coordinator helped me with my communication skills, which has helped me with my career path in education,” said Ebony Byrd, a senior majoring in education.
“It was a great learning experience because it was all new staff and we were all learning new skills for the first time,” she said.
Byrd said she developed new skills in advertising and proposal writing. She also helped design the event Web site, along with other flyers and logos used for promotion.
The experience also expanded her professional capabilities; Byrd now manages and operates the Web site for her sorority.
Working as a student coordinator can give employers an idea of students’ learning outside the classroom.
Selby Smith, a senior who participated in last year’s events, said he loved the hands-on experience and appreciates the lasting impact it had on his life.
Smith attended the recent career fair on campus and said many employers were impressed with the business skills he developed through the student coordinator program.
One of Smith’s favorite parts was selling T-shirts and sponsoring the events because of the fun he had interacting with other students on campus.
“I just remember looking out midday from Miller Auditorium, taking it in with the other coordinators, and thinking, wow, we did this,” said Smith.
Applications and other important information can be found online at www.salp.wmich.edu and are due in room 2420 of the Faunce Student Services building by Feb. 27 at 5 p.m.
Lynnae Stankus may be contacted at (269) 387‑2118 for additional information. Qualified applicants should have a minimum of a 2.5 cumulative GPA, good disciplinary standing and a strong commitment to the university.
