On Sept. 30 at 7 p.m., an alternative energy forum spotlighting algae oil will be held in room 2303 of Sangren Hall on Western Michigan University’s campus.
WMU social work professor and six-term Kalamazoo City Commissioner Don Cooney, a Democratic candidate in Michigan’s Sixth Congressional District this year, will be accompanied by Professor John Miller of the chemistry department and Professor Sarah Hill of the anthropology department at the forum to discuss their ongoing research into algae oil’s use as a biodiesel fuel.
The forum is about “understanding what kind of alternative energy is available,” with algae oil being used as an alternative, even, to “food-based fuels such as corn,” Miller said.
“It’s also about coupling that alternative with water clean-up,” Miller said.
Those present at the forum will be able to participate in discussion with the three, who will be going over pressing energy issues and discussing research on those issues.
The event will be co-sponsored by the WMU Students for a Sustainable Earth and the Cooney for Congress campaign.
