It may make you laugh at times, and it may make you cry, but for those in attendance at “The Vagina Monologues,” can definitely expect to be entertained while supporting a good cause.
“The Vagina Monologues,” which was created and originally performed by Eve Ensler as a one woman show, is based on interviews from over 300 women. The monologues are based on matters that women face, like sexual issues and violence.
“It’s like if your vagina had a story, what would it say?” said Samantha Eyde, event coordinator of the monologues.
Eyde, a Western Michigan University junior, will be performing in the monologues this Friday and Sunday with other former and present Western Michigan University students.
Womyn’s Equality, a WMU RSO, will be hosting the show on behalf of the “V-Day Campaign.”
“The V-Day Campaign is to raise awareness to end violence against women,” Eyde said.
Profits from the event will be donated in support of the Campaign.
Thousands of women across the globe perform “The Vagina Monologues,” to support the Campaign near Valentine’s day.
“During Valentine’s Day, as couples celebrate, it is important to raise awareness,” Eyde said.
Eyde explains although the monologues is a very empowering piece for women, it’s also very informative for men.
“It [the monologues] is something that is so important,” Eyde said. “I don’t think many people realize the oppression and violence.”
Eyde said the show also confronts the taboo word “vagina,” as most feel uncomfortable to say it.
“We should not be afraid to express ourselves,” Eyde added.
Performances will be held on Friday and Sunday at 8 p.m. in WMU’s Dalton Recital Hall. Tickets will be sold at the door for $5.
