Students who find themselves cramming during finals may also find that depriving themselves of sleep may cause more harm than they think. Lisa Marshall, a physician at Sindecuse Health Center, said sleep is very important for learning and memory. Marshall said that the general requirement for appropriate sleep time is eight hours, but she said that some people need less.
Sara Waisanen, a junior at Western Michigan University, is stepping in as the new editor-in-chief of the Western Herald as the current editor-in-chief, Abby Mercure, says goodbye during the last week of spring semester. Waisanen is 21 years old and is working toward a journalism major with a minor in women's studies.
Western Michigan University had the privilege of hosting the Great Lakes PeaceJam Saturday and Sunday, the sixth annual youth conference. The PeaceJam, which took place at the Bernhard Center, featured a variety of student-led workshops, team-building games and service projects, as well as speeches by Shirin Ebadi, a 2003 Nobel peace laureate.

"I'm so busy with my major, I have to have my cup of coffee before I sit down to study at night," said Lisa Della Pia, 19, a freshman majoring in music.
Regardless of the abundance of information available about the Western Edge, Western Michigan University administrators feel some students will be surprised to see a $500 scholarship incorporated into their financial statements in the fall. Introduced in fall of 2007, the Western Edge is a strategic plan for promoting student success and keeping the quality of education offered by WMU affordable.

Although student enrollment has steadily declined over the last five years, Western Michigan University is finally seeing an upturn in new freshmen and enrollment numbers. When determining student enrollment, university administration calculate the number of new students, freshmen, graduates and transfer students.

When I was a senior in high school filling out my bracket for the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament, I was excited to see Western Michigan University as a No. 11 seed playing against the University of Vanderbilt. Before, I had heard some things about the Bronco athletic teams, but growing up outside of Lansing and coming here for the following fall semester, I didn't have high expectations for the Brown and Gold to have much success in any sport.
Finals week is once again upon us, and as slowly as the week will pass for those of us with far more tests than we care to take, summer break is just around the corner. The next four months may provide an opportunity to live life without obligation, and that's an occasion that shouldn't be passed up.
