Adam Fox, Well said. Pessimism about the fate of the Orchard may be justified. Nevertheless, all that is needed for the land to be permanently protected is for President Dunn to decide that protection is the better course.

People are saying Hurt Locker was an upset. No. A Serious Man would have been an upset. Hurt Locker deserved Best Picture and it's just an added bonus that it beat out the most expensive movie ever made.

Do you mean that Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran is the first black and woman president, or that she is the first female and black? Surely first female and woman president is an error?

As an alum of WMU, reading Mr. Wright's article makes me very sad, not because his opinion is ill-informed, but because he is correct on so many points. However, I am hopeful that WMU President, Dr. John Dunn who has shown exceptional leadership in coordinating interested constituents for a WMU medical school, will demonstrate the same caliber of leadership required to restore to prominence, the Historic East Campus. After all, developing a medical school, without any state funding, is a much more daunting endeavor than restoring five historic buildings. Furthermore, restoration of the East Campus structures is a one-time cost; while funding a medical school will be an ongoing, significant financial obligation. I am confident that Dr. Dunn and our great university are capable of both, and it can be done through a combination of public and private funding. This means that the University's next capital request to Lansing must include funding for the restoration of East Hall, West Hall, North Hall, the former Speech & Hearing Center, and Vandercook Hall. These buildings must be the top five priorities on WMU's "wish list". The University's must also include funding for the restoration of these structures in its next capital campaign. Then, the University should use bonds to finance whatever funding is not covered by the state or through the capital campaign.

This is what separates universities like WMU, Michigan, Hillsdale, etc. from the "mass production" institutions -- history. Christine hit the nail on the head, East Campus has so much of that history, and students and alumni long for it. WMU never thinks twice about promoting the fact that they've been around since 1903, but what do we have to show for it? A bunch of rotting relics on top of a hill?
When I (and others I'm sure) think of WMU, I think of a bunch of run-of-the-mill West Campus buildings from the 60s and 70s. I don't think of East Campus because it's not ingrained into WMU's identity anymore. That needs to change.

I like how Booth is voted to have won the debate and 120 people voted, no more than 30 people were there. Sounds like someone has been trying to flood the vote

I really believe that Western's Administration really actually wants to revitalize East Campus. I just recently asked about fixing East Campus compared to the new apartments at the WMU Master Plan meeting. The answer i was given was that for the same price to build the new apartments they could probably have renovated (i believe he said Vandercook). The problem is that they would have 1/3 the rooms available about 100 compared to a little over 300 if i remember the Apartment presentation. This means that it would take 3x as long to pay off the the renovation. The money going to build the apartments is from bonds they plan on selling (again if i remember the apartment presentation at the WSA meeting) and im not sure how the whole bond thing would work out with it taking 3 times longer to pay off. The good thing is that the apartments will be paid for outside of university funds but the sad thing is that East Campus is still not being used…
To fix East Campus would be a heavy cost on the students that the administration just doesn't want to pass on to them. It is sad that the area isnt being fixed right now but there is nothing Western can do with getting less and less money even tho inflation is going up..

i do agree that it is sad and i really wish a fix could be found...
