Dear Editor, In 2010 WMU’s student body voted to put in place what would soon be a monumental achievement, the $8 student sustainability fee. The extreme foresight in understanding the importance and need for providing the funding of campus sustainability improvement should be commended. Now the issue lies solely in the hands of the students. [...]

Dear Editor, This letter is to students considering teaching as a future profession. I am a retired teacher who taught in Michigan public schools for 26 years. You should be aware of a side of education in this state that your professors are unlikely to disclose. You must understand that you, as a teacher, are [...]

Dear Editor, In my personal opinion, no one should be allowed to bring a personal vehicle onto the Western Michigan University campus without first completing a driver’s safety class. This applies to everyone, not just students. I say this because it appears that during the period of time many campus drivers have had their driver’s [...]

Dear Editor, What is the clear and specific purpose of Occupy Wall Street movement and what do its followers particularly want to achieve? This question remains unclear after months of protests that generally speaking are against our current economic system in the nation. In a nation like the United States, whose economy is one of [...]

Dear Editor, Campus tours at WMU have a large impact on students contemplating whether or not they should attend. The current way that the tours are being done is exceptional when compared to most other public Universities; however, I believe that they can still be improved upon. The tours should extend beyond the main area [...]

Dear Editor, The Western Herald recently published two articles and an editorial about the replacement of nine honey locust trees by solar panels near the Western Michigan Univeristy Miller Auditorium parking ramp. While I strongly advocate for the use of renewable energy sources, this paradoxical campus planning decision makes it appear that WMU believes reducing [...]

The Western Herald recently published an article highlighting WMU student outrage in response to the installation of solar panels and fifteen electric car-charging stations that resulted in the destruction of nine trees. I am disappointed and saddened by the shortsightedness of this project’s dissenters. Construction and maintenance projects all over Kalamazoo often result in the [...]

I am currently in my freshman year and I really am enjoying myself. Throughout all of the good things at WMU, one area does stick out like a sore thumb and I would like to share it with you—the dining services. I feel that there are not enough healthy choices and too many unhealthy ones. [...]

In America, about 1.3 million abortions are performed each year. And many wonder why would anyone want to abort their child? Here are some reasons why a woman would want to have abortion: rape, incest, they feel they are too young or they are in a situation of financial instability. Although abortion is a women’s [...]

The government has cut its support of Western Michigan University’s new Sangren Building, it cut the Michigan Promise Scholarship, and now one of Rick Snyder’s proposed cuts will possibly threaten historic East Campus. Meanwhile, the Kalamazoo Promise seems to be fine, along with the privatized cash gift of $100 million named “Operation Historic Moment.” When [...]

A recent Western Herald article titled “Professors pick your brain: Ten questions for students at WMU” by Katie King (Monday, April 18) inspired me to venture into traditionally unfamiliar territory between students and professors: open, honest dialogue. As a doctoral student in the Department of Sociology here at Western Michigan University, I occupy the unique [...]

It’s about time Western Michigan University’s dining halls went organic.
I mean, come on, there needs to be something changed in the cafeteria. I think I can vouch for most students that there is a general distaste for the food on most days.

In the article written by Dr. Baldner on April 3, he raises an important point in his discussion regarding the advancement of the Department of Philosophy. I think that he presents argumentation that should be taken into consideration by future students interested in a philosophy program. However, I think that the comparison he makes to [...]

Dear Western Herald, Last weekend, Dr. Dunn came into the restaurant I worked at and sat in my section. He and his wife chatted with me like any normal couple who goes out to eat, except for the tiny fact that he is the president of Western Michigan University, where I am a student. After [...]

Western Michigan University’s Office for Sustainability is conducting its first annual Student Sustainability Survey.
The primary goal of the survey is to assess how students would like to see the Office direct the Student Survey Implementation and Ongoing Projects portion of the recently established Sustainability Fee.

The Michigan Legislature let us down by not including the funding for WMU’s Sangren Hall in the last funding bill. However, the solution seems to be the students have to pay for it now. As a student at Western Michigan University, I believe it is unfair for us to pay for the university’s mistakes. The [...]

I am writing in response to the Western Herald article “Medical marijuana for students not allowed on WMU’s campus” which was published on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, Vol. 95, Issue 22. It is absurd and ‘old thinking’ that motivates the university to “… not allow marijuana on campus even if a student has a state-issued [...]

I am writing to strongly encourage everyone in Kalamazoo’s 60th District to elect Chris Praedel as our next State Representative. Have you heard that Western Michigan University is taking away the right to pay tuition with Visa and then charging 2.75% for paying with a credit card? Has anyone noticed how, while they said that money was previously coming out of tuition, they’re not lowering the tuition at all, they’re just taking the extra money [...]

Through my experiences in the Western Student Association this semester, I’ve had the privilege of meeting two fine young men: Andrew Ladd and Christopher Rettich. Ladd, the senate speaker, and Rettich, a former high school student body president, have let their principles do their talking, not their connections.
