Letters to the Editor – Praedel for State Representative

I am writing to strongly encourage everyone in Kalamazoo’s 60th District to elect Chris Praedel as our next State Representative. Chris was born and raised in Kalamazoo and knows exactly what we need to succeed and thrive as a city. As a professional here at WMU, I have served as Chris’s Advisor and Supervisor, and have…

WMU should provide a booklet of useful links for students on campus

By Hassan Al-Momani
Western Herald

When looking at the Western Michigan University website, it makes me wonder why there isn’t a comprehensive link or booklet that lists useful resources for students within different departments.

Most universities provide their students with a link or a booklet on the useful websites that help the students explore the main concepts in their majors.

Independence Day: a necessary investment

By David Alexander

July 4. For many people it brings to mind several things: apple pie, a day off work, the sudden proliferation of the old Stars and Stripes, and perhaps most notably, fireworks. Lots of fireworks.

Letter to the editor

Have you heard that Western Michigan University is taking away the right to pay tuition with Visa and then charging 2.75% for paying with a credit card? Has anyone noticed how, while they said that money was previously coming out of tuition, they’re not lowering the tuition at all, they’re just taking the extra money [...]

Reflecting on President Obama’s visit to Kalamazoo

Western Herald

There was an energy in the Kalamazoo community the week Kalamazoo Central’s video, one of six of 1,000 entries, was being voted on by the public; then ultimately chosen as the winner by President Obama himself in the national 2010 Race to the Top Commencement Challenge.

Obama comes to Kalamazoo

By Zeke Trezevant
Sports Editor

President Barack Obama came to Kalamazoo Monday to speak at Kalamazoo Central High School’s 2010 commencement. Personally, I’ve heard the president speak on two occasions before this but neither of those (including the inauguration) compared to Monday. Monday was a day I’ll never forget simply because I highly doubt I’ll ever be that close to another United States president.

Letter to the editor: Kaplan is best for Student Affairs Committee Chair

As the exiting Hillel President and a former WSA senator, I could not be more confident to pass down my Hillel responsibilities to Erin Kaplan. Over the last month, I have worked with Erin to transition her into the Hillel presidential position and was quickly able to gain insight into her daily life. I was truly amazed at Erin’s ability to multi task, balance her multiple board positions, put school first, and at the same time, have a clear vision of what she wants to accomplish for the student body.

Herald Editorial: Financial knowledge important for students

It’s a fact: financial illiteracy is common among ‘The Millennial Generation’, the moniker given to those born between the early 1980s and the early 1990s.

According to a 2004 study by Harris Interactive for Northwestern Mutual, only 5 percent of those in their early and mid-20s felt that they were “very knowledgeable” in business dealings and investing.

I guess this is my home for a while

Writing a reflection about my first year at WMU is probably one of the most difficult tasks I have done all year. Good or bad, of the experiences I had throughout my first taste of college there are none in which I regret. I refer to WMU now as my home, and although it has some irritating qualities it is worth being commended.

Finals week. Once again we’ve made it to the last week of the semester. Only a few exams from now, most of us will be packing in the academia for the summer and doing things that are much more constructive. The exams are hard enough, but unfortunately that’s only one of the obstacles we face to get through this final week of school.

Herald Editorial: University needs to take more accountability for ‘Western Edge’

Is this becoming the Era of Questionable Promises?  There’s the Michigan Promise — enough said on that.  And then there’s the Kalamazoo Promise — a whole ‘nother beast that’s being studied and copied . . . and the verdict’s not in yet.  And then there’s the Western promise — well, “sort of” promise.  Called the Western Edge, it’s a “customer service” type promise in the form of a contract, but it’s not widely known, nor is it available to all students.

If students prepare, final exams should cause little anxiety

By Hassan al-Momani
Western Herald

Each semester students feel stressed and anxious about final exams and grades. This is a natural feeling related to the eagerness to pass the exams and get high grades. Some students exaggerate in their fear of final exams because they do not know how to overcome their stress and worries. Other students have the ability to deal with final exams successfully through organizing their studying and preparing well for exams.
