Dunn on the Run: Finals and final thoughts
Saturday, December 12th, 2009A student asked me the other (day about final exams and my e)
xperiences as an undergraduate student. I told him that I recall very well the process of preparing for and taking finals. There was the anticipation of the exam, completing the final, and then waiting in great [...]
Dunn on the Run: Giving Thanks
Friday, November 13th, 2009We will soon be approaching on (e of our country)
’s most treasured holidays—Thanksgiving. For many, this means time with family, lots of turkey, mashed potatoes, and all the trimmings. For others, those not from the USA or those whose cultural roots are different, the day may be more of an opportunity to sleep late, catch [...]
The world will know…
Monday, November 9th, 2009Alyssa Herter (Arts Editor)Here’s the thing: I’m a dreamer.
Straight up, daydream all the time, dream about the way I wish things could be right now, dream about my future and what it might hold, dream about impossible things coming true… I dream.
Being this much of a dreamer can really become a delicate balance. I’m not [...]
Dunn on the Run: Facebook is fun, but be careful
Thursday, October 29th, 2009I enjoy being o (n Facebook). As of last night, I have approximately 3,000 friends. Most of my friends are WMU students, so that makes the connection special.
While interaction with my friends has to be somewhat limited due to time constraints, there is a great comfort in using this social medium to “connect” and to be [...]
Homecoming, today and sixty-six years ago
Thursday, October 22nd, 2009Click here for selections from (1943 Brown and Gold)As Central/Western weekend has come to a close and Homecoming week is in full swing, Bronco pride is at its highest. On a campus where students pride themselves on bleeding brown and gold, many wonder where the concept of school spirit comes from.
The question brings me back [...]
Please don’t hit me
Monday, October 19th, 2009Alyssa Herter (Arts Editor)Parking on campus freaks me out. Not because I’m worried about finding a spot on time for class, though that happens, but because I daily fear for my life, or at least the well-being of my poor little Oldsmobile.
It’s that point in the season when rainy days drive more students to the [...]
Dunn on the Run: Let’s Beat CMU on the field and with class
Wednesday, October 14th, 2009Two football s (easons ago), I accompanied our football team to the University of Nebraska. Although our team played well, the Broncos lost. But the game was memorable.
The crowd was large and clearly pulling for the home team, the Cornhuskers. However, the fans, including students, stood out because they were polite and respectful of the Broncos. It was eerie. The Nebraska [...]
Kalamazoo’s radio, the good and the bad
Tuesday, October 13th, 2009Sports and music are two of th (e driving forces in my life an)d I definitely need one or the other when I drive my car.
Although, I think I have found the best and worst radio stations in the area and if you’re looking for some good ones, I have a few suggestions.
My favorite has to [...]
The 8th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan
Thursday, October 8th, 2009Wednesday marked eight years o (f a war that truly ushered in )terrorism as a modern warfare tactic. The current mood of American society is hard to judge but it seems anything but fully supportive or happy.
In fact, America’s reaction seems to be a mixed bag.
Some have held vigils in opposition, like the local Kalamazoo [...]
The Library Joke
Monday, October 5th, 2009I cannot understand any ty (pe of joke)… I am a little slow when it comes to humor. But there is one joke I could not live without.
It is not to offend anyone, and it is only funny because I laughed for probably half an hour over this simple joke but here goes…
So there’s [...]
Sitting the season out
Friday, October 2nd, 2009 this post was originally publ (ished on Oct)
(Note:. 2; this is a revised version published on Oct. 3)
Last week, my friend Casey asked me if I played “the game.”
“The game?” I replied.
She nodded.
After a few minutes I realized what she was talking about. The game. The flirtation game. The text messaging game. The let-me-try [...]

The best time of year to be a northerner
Thursday, September 24th, 2009The best time of year to be a (northerner)
By Alyssa Herter Arts Editor
Blustery days, cozy cardigans, warm vanilla lattes, and the Shins.
These are only the highlights of my lengthy “why autumn is my favorite season” mental list. Don’t get me wrong, I love the sunshine and sundresses of summer, but after a couple months of heat, I’m ready for the warmth generated by the cold, you trackin’?

Racial lines blur in today’s political climate
Monday, September 14th, 2009If you walked past the Bernhar (d Center or the flagpoles on W)estern Michigan University’s campus this afternoon you may have seen posters of President Barack Obama sporting an interesting new look; a Hitler’s mustache.
For some, particularly a few black students, the posters were alarming and troubling, judging by the looks on the faces of those [...]

The Kalamazoo pulse
Thursday, September 10th, 2009Being in Kalamazoo (all summer), it’s nice to feel a pulse once again.
I thought I would dread coming back to school, find myself stressing out at the thought of being constantly surrounded by things to do.
But I have thoroughly enjoyed this first week so far.
Going into my third year here at Western Michigan University [...]

The Technological Womb
Tuesday, August 25th, 2009The Technolo (gical Womb)
Some may call it stalking, but for three of the last four summers, I have spent six to eight hours a day following nurses around the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Bronson hospital. Wherever nurses went - patient rooms, the supply closet, the break room, or the bathroom (I waited outside) – I followed. “Are you pre-med?” families would ask me. Nope, just making money.

Good TV
Saturday, August 22nd, 2009Every once a (nd a while)Good TV
, I find myself changing the remote to a reality show. I usually hate myself for it after a while, but sometimes I just need a good dose of drama that isn't my own. My sister loves the "Real World" and my mother loves to watch "Big Brother," and sometimes I sit there with them watching "real life" unfold in front of my eyes.

Report from Malaysia: “Bad times? What bad times?”
Thursday, August 13th, 2009Report fro (m Malaysia): “Bad times? What bad times?”
Just before I left the United States two months ago, I remember having a phone conversation with my mom regarding difficult economic times in Asia. At the time, the United States was struggling as well–certainly not news to many. “Singapore is hit pretty badly, too,” I remember her saying, with a sigh, “and everything is so uncertain in Malaysia.”

Texting while driving makes no sense
Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 there is a bill in the Michig (an Legislation that)Currently, would put a statewide ban on texting while driving.
First of all, we shouldn’t need a law for people to stop texting
while driving, it’s pretty much common sense, and yet, all the time
I get friends texting me and they say, “I’m driving.”
But why would you text and [...]

Pretending to be drunk
Monday, August 3rd, 2009Pretending t (o be drunk)
Last night I got wasted. Well, at least I acted like I did. There were about six parties I was invited too - a lot of acquaintances were getting ready to move into new apartments and wanted to have one last "hurrah" in their places. It was to be a 2008-09 party wood revue.

Is it just me, or does MTV suck now? Every time I turn on “Music Television” I hope to see some music videos like in the good old days of the network. But every time, I am not treated to music, but, to some garbage show on the network.

“Is there no way out of the mind?”
Thursday, July 30th, 2009Is there no way out o (f the mind)"?"
Not my mind. My mind is always in full gear. There is no way out of it. Even in my sleep I'm worrying about work, my life, my relationships. The college mind is a sea full of anxiety.
