The Kalamazoo pulse

Being in Kalamazoo all summer, it’s nice to feel a pulse once again.

I thought I would dread coming back to school, find myself stressing out at the thought of being constantly surrounded by things to do.

But I have thoroughly enjoyed this first week so far.

Going into my third year here at Western Michigan University I sense the familiarity of it all, and at the same time the differences.

The faces of freshman packed together with their dorm buddies, checking room number to room number, hoping to find a match on their printed out schedules.

Or the sound of the Bronco Marching Band, practicing so loud, you can still hear it from the Student Faunce Building.

The sound of students singing in Dalton, or the art students carrying their portfolios.

The back-up traffic and complaints of tickets due to expired meters.

The first classroom introductions, and while the “ice breakers” seem to change with questions, you still get antsy at the thought of which answer will be truly dynamic to show you as an individual.

The sight of bags and shirts adorned with a sorority or fraternity symbol.

And the most noticeable occurrence, the overwhelming amount of traffic between buildings, in buildings, and pretty much anywhere near campus.

I have missed this beating rhythm of Western Michigan University which I very much consider to be a big part of Kalamazoo.

And as we all settle into to this new year and find our parts in this university; freshman, transfer and returning students, I am excited to see what the new year brings.

But more importantly, I am excited once again, for the pulse, the feeling that I have so far in my student career associated with WMU, and with Kalamazoo.
