The best time of year to be a northerner
Blustery days, cozy cardigans, warm vanilla lattes, and the Shins.
These are only the highlights of my lengthy “why autumn is my favorite season” mental list. Don’t get me wrong, I love the sunshine and sundresses of summer, but after a couple months of heat, I’m ready for the warmth generated by the cold, you trackin’?
Watching the wind shake down the trees out my window while snuggling under a fleece blanket in front of the TV with a cup of coffee might be one of the greatest relaxation techniques I know.
I also have a thing for scarves and hats. I love when it’s chilly enough to wear such cozy accessories, while not freezing to the bone. To quote my man Benjamin Gibbard, “I don’t mind the weather, I’ve got scarves and caps and sweaters…”
Indian Summer annoys me to no end. I mean honestly, I get teased by a week of blissfully chill days, only to have to break out the summer duds for another two weeks. I must say, today is alright by me. Too many gray days may be gloomy, but too much sunshine is boring.
Michigan weather drives me nuts at times, especially considering how my recent two years living in Florida shot my cold weather resistance to… well, you know. However, if I stop griping about the dry air, and the cold, I really love the privilege of living in a state where the seasons change.
The leaves are already shifting to shades of ginger and crimson, the hills framing Kalamazoo valley will soon be a kaleidoscope of fiery color.
I’m excited to get through classes today so I can sit down with the New York Times, a latte, and my LP of Oh, Inverted World spinning.
