Western Michigan Softball splits with Akron
The Western Michigan women’s softball team finished their second home conference double header winning the first game 7-0, and the loosing the second game 2-0. The Broncos were tied with the Zips 0-0 up until the bottom of the sixth when Samantha Vargocko hit a double out to left field, and then after Vargocko hit, Gracie Barstad was walked, after that Mandi Sayres then hit a single to bring Vargocko home, to bring the Broncos up 1. With Barstad, and Sayres on the bases Michelle Bendewald hit a homerun out to left field bringing in with her Barstad, and Sayres, which gave the Broncos a 4 run lead. The Broncos were not ready to finish the inning yet, and with Reist, and Fuller on the bases Lexi Jager homered to left field bringing in three runs for the Broncos. Meredith Whitney took the win, and with this win she has now had five shut outs this season. In the second game the Broncos did not do as well at the plate, and were unable to make any runs giving Akron their first Conference win of the season, and giving the Broncos an overall 3-1 record for this weekend. Meghan Thomas pitched for the Broncos in the second game, and has a record of 2-4 at the mound for the season thus far. The Broncos will play at home again this weekend against Conference competiors from Bowling Green, and Toledo.
