Did video really kill the radio star? What happened to the original MTV?
Is it just me, or does MTV suck now? Every time I turn on “Music Television” I hope to see some music videos like in the good old
days of the network. But every time, I am not treated to music, but,
to some garbage show on the network.
My mom has told me numerous times that in my early years I would sit in front of the TV all day and watch MTV. Of course this was in the late 1980s and early ’90s when music actually played on the network.
Saturday is the 28th Anniversary of MTV’s launch on Aug. 1, 1981
when The Buggles “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first video to
ever play on the network. That’s pretty funny, since if I want to
listen to music, I turn on the radio and not MTV.
So MTV didn’t really kill the radio show.
Now we have these worthless shows on the network like “My Super Sweet 16.” I’m not even sure where to start with this show.
So, basically these kids that are turning 16, who are spoiled rich get a huge party to celebrate their birthday. These kids have absolutely no respect for money.
Usually you hear something like, “I don’t care how much it cost, I want it.”
Or sometimes the dad lets his daughter take his credit card out for
a shopping spree. When I become a father, there is no chance that I
would do that, no matter how much money I have. And then these
parents put on parties that cost more than my car and even worse,
the 16-year-old gets a brand new Porsche or SUV for their birthday.
Worse idea ever. Statistics show that 16-year-olds are the worse
drivers because of lack of experience, so why would you buy your kid
a Porsche or an SUV. It makes no sense. Maybe they need “After My
Sweet 16″ to see how they wrecked their brand new car.
Then there’s “The Hills,” which seems like every girl in America
watches this stupid show. This a show about spoiled rich stuck up
people in California and supposedly is a reality show. Reality, yeah
right. Just like “Made,” MTV has something to do with it to make it
interesting.
I had a girl for a roommate last summer, so I kind of knew what was
going through word of mouth.
But all I hear that on this show is, “Oh my God! Spencer broke up
with Heidi and my car broke down and now my parents need to buy me a new BMW.”
Wow. Why do people watch this crap?
So, MTV goes from music all day 28 years ago to “The Hills.”
If you watch “Parental Control,” you actually think it’s legit? It’s
probably rigged since the TV in all the of the shows is the same in
every house.
Now I do watch MTV sometimes, don’t get me wrong. I love the reruns of “Beavis and Butt-head,” the older “Celebrity Deathmatch” (which were originally played on MTV in the 90s), “Rob and Big” and “True Life,” but most of the stuff is just crap.
The original Cribs was great, but now MTV has “Teen Cribs.”
Are you serious? This isn’t like celebrity kids or anything, it’s, once
again, kids of rich parents. This show makes me sick again.
Especially when the kids are like, “my house is the best house in the neighborhood.”
And even MTV2, which originally was like the original MTV when MTV2 launched in 1996, has become just a copy of MTV.
I could sit here all day and rip apart every show on MTV, but the
bottom line is that it’s not the same as it used to be and I want to
see music videos being played on Music Television. When you think
about it, video didn’t really kill the radio star.

A nice alternative is mtvU, a sister channel which airs in the dorms and I’m not sure where else. It shows mainly music videos to songs by up-and-coming artists, with a couple newsbreaks and the like here and there.
