The Western Film Society returns for the 2012/13 school year this weekend with a screening of “Safety Not Guaranteed” at the Little Theater on WMU’s East campus, located on the corner of Oakland Drive and Oliver Street.
Directed by Colin Trevorrow, “Safety Not Guaranteed” features an impressive cast full of rising stars: Aubrey Plaza (NBC’s “Parks and Recreation”), Mark Duplass, Jake M. Johnson and Kristen Bell. The film is rated R for language and sexual references, and has an 86 minute runtime. Admission is $5 or $3 with a student ID. Showtimes are listed below according to the Western Film Society’s website:
Friday, Oct. 19 – 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM
Saturday, Oct. 20 – 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM
Sunday, Oct. 21 – 2:30 PM and 5:00 PM
According to a recent press release, “Safety Not Guaranteed” follows “Darius, a magazine intern played by Aubrey Plaza, [who] investigates a mysterious classified ad that reads as follows, ‘Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. I have only done this once before. Safety not guaranteed.’”
“Safety Not Guaranteed” was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize, and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. In addition, it currently holds a 94% approval rating (out of 109 reviews) on popular review aggregate Rotten Tomatoes.
“‘Safety Not Guaranteed’ has a lot of things going for it: great actors, [great] reviews, and awards,” said Justin Gibson, President of the Western Film Society. “Before now, it never played anywhere in Kalamazoo, so I figured there were probably a lot of people out there like me who wanted a chance to check it out.”
“The Western Film Society is a student-run organization that strives to show critically acclaimed films that might not make it to Kalamazoo, due to being independent, small-run, or low budget releases,” Gibson said.
Originally, WMU faculty operated the Western Film Society. However, in 2000, the organization was turned over to students who have been in charge ever since. At the same time, what was then called The Campus Cinema was given a new name: the Little Theater. All Western Film Society screenings take place at the Little Theater, which has become a sanctum for many Kalamazoo area film lovers.
