The Second Sunday Series, a series of concerts that began in October and take place at Kalamazoo’s 411 Club, will be holding its final three concerts over the next three months.
The concerts, which are being held to raise funds for the 2010 Kalamazoo Blues Festival, will take place on March 14, April 11, and May 16.
Sponsored by the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association, this Sunday’s concert will feature local blues act Left Turn Blues Band and Pennsylvania blues band The Alligators.
April 11’s concert will feature Muskegon’s Left Paul Trio and Lansing’s Pat Zelenka Project.
The May 16 show will wrap up the series with Grand Rapid’s Thirsty Perch Blues Band, and another act that has yet to be announced.
Like previous performances, all the bands play for free and will be part of the roster for the 2010 Kalamazoo Blues Festival.
The 411 Club, which took over the blues scene when Wonderful’s Funky Basement closed its doors in 2007, is also a sponsor for the 2010 Kalamazoo Blues Festival, according to 411 Club General Manager Tim Miller.
Besides showcasing bands of all kinds, 411 also has its own music equipment in case musicians need it.
“It helps the bands out, the bar out, and the festival out,” Miller said. “As for what we bring to the blues, it’s unprecedented.”
“It’s a good variety of acts around the region,” Tom Machin, who books bands for 411, said. “Generally speaking, the turnout has been fairly good for the bands.”
The 411 Club has also hosted other Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association related events, such as the 11th Annual KVBA Blues Challenge back in September 2009.
For Machin, the results that 411 Club and the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association gain from working with each other can only be mutually beneficial.
“We try to help [the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association] and live blues out there,” Machin said. “They scratch our back, and we scratch theirs.”
“We are more than willing to help [the Kalamazoo Valley Blues Association].”
Admission for the concerts is $6 at the door. Shows begin at 4:30 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m.
