For those looking to take a walk on the wild side, Miller Auditorium brings the zoo to you this Sunday with the return of its popular show, “Tales from the Field with Jeff Corwin.”
Renowned speaker and television host Jeff Corwin mixes audience interaction, his own irreverent sense of humor, and a passion for the environment in this unique ani-mal show.
His goal is to inspire audiences to become more aware of the threats facing global wildlife and the environment.
Working in conjunction with Miller Auditorium are the Kalamazoo Nature Center and Grand Rapids’ Binder Park Zoo, who are co-sponsoring the event. Altogether the show brings a wildlife experience right to the fingertips of Kalamazoo citizens and students.
Binder Park Zoo and the Nature Center will both be holding pre-show events in the lobby of the auditorium.
These events will be educational in spirit, and feature animals that audience members can interact with before Corwin takes the stage. These preshow events will begin at 12:30 p.m. in Miller Auditorium’s main, and grand tier lobbies.
The entire collaboration connects these hard-working local organizations with the celebrity status of Jeff Corwin. A pop culture figure on the nature and environmental scenes, Corwin currently has shows on three different networks — the Travel Channel, Animal Planet, and the Food Network.
“If students are fans of his shows on Animal Planet, the Discovery Channel, or Food Network, then this is a show not to be missed,” Bethany Gauthier, assistant director of marketing for Miller Auditorium said.
Corwin’s television shows revolve around his broad travel experience, his extensive knowledge of animals, their environments, and conservation efforts.
“He’ll speak on those topics, as well as bring some of his animal friends with him up on stage so audience members can come interact with them,” Gauthier said. “It’s a very fun and engaging show.”
Corwin is also a renowned speaker on the topics of environmentalism and conservation, two major buzzwords on both the college and national media circuits. By bringing the literal face, and nose, and furry little paws of nature right in front of the audience, Corwin gives a very real reason to step up the efforts of going “green.”
His unique style of presentation is one reason Corwin has remained on the television screen for so many years.
He combines practical and vital education with a sense of humor and fun, allowing his message to reach an even broader audience.
“Though he’s obviously brilliant, he really is quite funny and can relate to younger crowds quite well,” Gauthier said.
Miller Auditorium is one of Kalamazoo and Western Michigan University’s premier entertainment venues. Corwin is just one way the auditorium maintains a wide variety of entertainment that offers something for everybody. This is not his first time appearing in Kalamazoo; his previous appearance was so popular that Miller was requested to bring him back.
“This is a great interactive show that all ages can enjoy,” Gauthier said.
Although the Amazonian rainforests may be far away from the freezing autumn of Kalamazoo, it will feel like a jungle at Miller when Jeff Corwin tells his “tales” with the help of his furry friends.
“Tales from the Field with Jeff Corwin” will be presented at Miller Auditorium Sunday. The show will begin at 2:00 p.m., with pre-show events beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tick-ets are available online or at the Miller Auditorium Box Office.
