Crawlspace Eviction at Studio 246

Local improv troupe Crawlspace Eviction is setting its sights on a subject that may be all too familiar to students — texting.

This weekend, Crawlspace Eviction will be performing at Studio 246 with a show titled “I Wanna Text You Up or Same Text Marriage.”

Crawlspace Eviction is a product of Crawlspace Theatre Productions, an organization that brings improv and sketch comedy to Kalamazoo.

“The shows are Friday and Saturday and are kind of unique,” said Dann Sytsma, director of Crawlspace Theatre Productions and member of Crawlspace Eviction. “We do follow the theme that we titled show.”

While the show will consist of mostly short-form improv games, the comedy troupe will also perform some sketch-like material.

“One of the bigger features that we’re doing a movie monologue,” Sytsma said. “We’re going to have some strange bizarre twist on movie monologues. We figured with the Oscars coming up, people would be in that kind of mood. That’s part of what we’re doing.”

However, most of the show will be performed with a texting twist.

How, exactly, Sytsma isn’t quite sure about.

“It depends on how we get going with the show,” Sytsma said. “We’ll ask the audience for suggestions and relate texting and the introduction of technology into the show. For example, the audience might give us a location where texting would be inappropriate, and we’ll kind of lead that into the show somehow.”
“We try to come up with clever way to incorporate [texting],” Sytsma added.

The short-form games that Crawlspace will perform are similar to games that might be seen on the popular improv show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” Sytsma said.

“We try to be more scenic in our approach and not as gaggy in the games we choose,” Sytsma said.

“I Wanna Text You Up” will be sponsored by Tempo Vino Winery of Kalamazoo.
“[Tempo Vino] is a cool business,” Sytsma said. “They’re going to be sponsoring the event and bringing in some goodies. Unfortunately, no wine.”

Sytsma recommends that students take advantage of the student discount Crawlspace Theatre Productions provides and go see the show.

“We give student discounts so students can come and see a good live show for $7, which is cheaper than the movies, I believe,” Sytsma said. “It’s improv comedy, so you’ll never see that again. It’s unique to that moment.”

Sytsma also advises students to attend the event for refreshments that will be offered at the show.

“Free food is a good incentive for college students,” Sytsma said.

Crawlspace Eviction performs monthly, and will be back at Studio 246 on March 26 and 27 with a show called “Kalamazoological Society.”

Crawlspace’s sister comedy troupe, Kind of Pretty Women, will be performing at Studio 246 on March 12 and 13.

“We’re just another reason to come downtown and experience downtown Kalamazoo,” Sytsma said.

“I Wanna Text You Up or Same Text Marriage” will be held on Friday, Feb. 19 and Saturday, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m. at Studio 246, which is located downtown at 246 N. Kalamazoo Mall.

Tickets will be available at the door for $10 for general admission and $7 for students.
