On his two hundredth birthday, the works of German composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) will be celebrated by Western Michigan University’s Bullock Performance Institute with three concerts at Dalton Center Recital Hall, dubbed the Schumann-a-thon.
Part of the Institute’s Bullock Series, the concerts will be headed by Lori Sims, Pianist and John T. Bernhard Professor of Music at WMU, who is a devotee of Schumann’s music.
The winner of the 1993 American Pianists Association Competition, Sims has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and China, and was the first local Kalamazoo artist to be featured at the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in 2000, according to her biography on WMU’s School of Music official Web site.
Joined by musicians such as baritone Joshua Hopkins, the three concerts of the Schumann-a-thon will consist of chamber music in the first half, and a solo piano works in the second half. A short lecture will precede the second half that is intended to explain Schumann’s contributions to 19th century music, as well as introduce the audience to the music.
The concerts will take place Saturday, Jan. 23, Saturday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Feb. 6, all at 3 p.m. Tickets are available through the Miller Auditorium Ticket Office at 269-387-2300, or 800-228-9858. Tickets are $12, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students.
