A cappella group WMU Broncords sings out

“Eight men, one goal – to rock your socks off.” That’s how member Ben Dennis describes the mission of the WMU Broncords.

The Broncords, WMU’s student a cappella group, have been serenading WMU since 2007, when friends Kenny Weber and Chad Schon decided to put their singing talents together.

The group started its first semester nine members strong, singing under the radar. Shortly after the formation of the group, they lost six members to other obligations. Since then, the number and names of members have fluctuated.

Today, the group rests at eight members.

Although the group started in 2007, they did not have their first show as headliners until two years into their musical journey.

Before they headlined any shows, they opened up for other collegiate a cappella groups such as Central Michigan University’s group, Fish N Chips.

Late this summer, when faced with missing the date for reserving a booth at Bronco Bash, the group devised a plan to help get out the Broncord word without a booth. The men recreated the popular tune “Lollipop” and walked around the event singing the song to new fans.

During the spring semester of 2009, the Broncords headlined their first show in the Bernhard Center.

Following the success of that show, they performed in the Dalton Recital Hall with a show titled “Manly Men, Singing Manly Things.” This show also proved successful, and there is now another show in the works.

The upcoming show, which is scheduled for April 5 in the Dalton Recital Hall, will feature the all-girl a cappella group Minor Detail, which was founded this semester. The show will also feature the group No Strings Attached, a co-ed group.

“The Broncords are very excited to be able to show WMU every spectrum of a cappella music,” Dennis said.

Tickets to the show will be $3 for students and $5 for adults.

Recently, the Broncords picked up their first sponsor, the Western Michigan University Alumni Association.

More information on the Broncords can be found on the group’s Facebook page.

The Broncords are also currently searching for one or two new bass members. For more information on the openings, e-mail Chad Schon at c6schon@wmich.edu.
