Shoot for 6 hours of sleep while cramming

Students who find themselves cramming during finals may also find that depriving themselves of sleep may cause more harm than they think.

Lisa Marshall, a physician at Sindecuse Health Center, said sleep is very important for learning and memory. Marshall said that the general requirement for appropriate sleep time is eight hours, but she said that some people need less.

Waisanen takes over as head of Herald newsroom

Sara Waisanen, a junior at Western Michigan University, is stepping in as the new editor-in-chief of the Western Herald as the current editor-in-chief, Abby Mercure, says goodbye during the last week of spring semester.

Waisanen is 21 years old and is working toward a journalism major with a minor in women's studies.

Western Michigan University had the privilege of hosting the Great Lakes PeaceJam Saturday and Sunday, the sixth annual youth conference. The PeaceJam, which took place at the Bernhard Center, featured a variety of student-led workshops, team-building games and service projects, as well as speeches by Shirin Ebadi, a 2003 Nobel peace laureate.

When I was a senior in high school filling out my bracket for the NCAA Men's Basketball tournament, I was excited to see Western Michigan University as a No. 11 seed playing against the University of Vanderbilt. Before, I had heard some things about the Bronco athletic teams, but growing up outside of Lansing and coming here for the following fall semester, I didn't have high expectations for the Brown and Gold to have much success in any sport.

Two tennis titles claimed by WMU

Over the weekend, the Western Michigan University athletic program hit a tennis sweepstakes.

It got two Mid-American Conference titles on the same day, as both the men's and women's tennis teams wrapped-up undefeated conference crowns Saturday afternoon.

For the women, a win against Bowling Green State University gave them their fourth-straight undefeated MAC crown and pushed the conference winning-streak to 34 games.

McDowell introduced as women's head coach

Despite no prior head coaching experience, Western Michigan University athletic director Kathy Beauregard announced that Tasha McDowell will take over the head reigns of the Bronco women's basketball program.

McDowell comes from the Big Ten Conference where she spent the last three seasons as an assistant at the University of Wisconsin and has a total of 11 years of coaching experience.
