WMU student pleads ‘not guilty’ to charges

The Western Michigan University student arrested during the demonstrations at the Capital Building earlier in the month pled “not guilty” to charges of misdemeanor trespassing during an appearance in court Wednesday morning.

The Stylish Bronco | Fashionable Reading

March is Reading Month and, with it coming to an end, it got me thinking about how people don’t read enough.

I’ve run into enough people lately who say they don’t like reading.  That seems a little crazy to me since there are books in any number of topics out there to tickle your fancy.  Fashionistas, in particular, who find reading boring should take a second look at the shelves.  From paperbacks to heavy, hardcover coffee table books, there is bound to be something you might like.

Go eat a book: Kalamazoo Book Arts Center holds sixth annual Edible Book Festival

Thursday’s march will honor rights activist Cesar Chavez

The 2011 Cesar Chavez March will be held Thursday, March 31, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The purpose of the march, according to a press release, is to get everyone together to fight for the cause of equal rights and better pay of working class citizens.

WMU students, staff speaks out at ‘Disabled but Powerful’ talk

In a state where one in five citizens has a disability, panelists aimed to inform students that disabled people are capable of much more than society gives them credit for.

The Disabled but Powerful talk was the second of three discussions in the Real Talk Diversity Series and was held in Western Michigan University’s Trimpe Building on Tuesday evening.

KAS to celebrate anniversary with talk by WMU astronomy professor

The Kalamazoo Astronomical Society will be celebrating its 75th anniversary this Friday, April 1, at 7 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Area Mathematics and Science Center.

Western Michigan University professor of astronomy and member of the KAS, Dr. Kirk Korista, will be giving a presentation titled, “Why is the Night Sky Dark … Or is it?” The goal of the presentation, according to a press release, is to discuss “Olbers’ Paradox” and put it alongside the 20th century discovery of the sky being bright.

English is a complicated language, I have to admit, but thanks to the new addition to the Oxford English Dictionary, OED, I’m afraid that my job, as well as other English teachers’, just got a lot more difficult.

SSE hosts lecture, workshop by ecological artist to discuss water runoff

Western Michigan University’s Students for a Sustainable Earth (SSE) are taking part in an initiative to prevent storm water runoff from falling into Arcadia Creek, which leads to the Kalamazoo River.

In order to make the project a success, SSE took steps to spread awareness by co-hosting a biosculpture lecture and a storm water workshop with Jackie Brookner, an ecological artist who specializes in water remediation.

WMU, ROTC to host 2nd annual Wounded Warrior event in April

Saturday, April 9 will mark the day of the 2nd annual Wounded Warrior Benefit 5k run or walk.

The race will start at 9 a.m. near Western Michigan University’s Army Battalion and will end in the same place. The race is hosted by WMU’s Army and Air Force ROTC programs.
