WMU student attacked early this morning

The Western Michigan University campus is on alert following an early morning attack on a female student.

The incident happened around 6 a.m. between WMU’s Elmwood Apartments and Smith/Ernest Burnham’s residence hall.

WMU football team voted third in preseason poll

The Western Michigan University football team received two first-place votes and was picked to finish third in the West Division, according to the Mid-American Conference Preseason Media Poll.

WMU track hits another milestone

Western Michigan University’s Iris Campbell, Irene Cooper and Ashley Hunault were named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2010 Division I All-Academic Track & Field Team. Their performances on the track and in the classroom led to the nominations.

KidSpeak provides forum for youth aging out of foster care

A group of high school-aged foster home students from Wayne, Washtenaw and Jackson counties, along with a few Western Michigan University students formerly in foster care, spoke to a panel of 23 policymakers and other community leaders about their experiences.

The event, called KidSpeak, took place in Room 208 of  WMU’s Bernhard Center and was the culmination of a two-day camp that the university hosted for the kids.

Bernhard Center director candidate shares his visions with WMU

Researching and renovating the culture of a student center is central to in Edmud Mirecki’s visions of what a student center could be.

Mirecki is one of three candidates who are running to be the next director of the Bernhard Center.  He addressed the Western Michigan University community Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the South Ballroom of the BHC. He has his own vision that a student center, besides that, is the living room of a campus.

Sherburn to retire from WMU Public Safety

With 29 years of service behind her, Diana Sherburn, administrative assistant at Western Michigan University’s Public Safety department, is retiring from her position. A retirement reception for Sherburn is scheduled for Thursday, July 29, at WMU’s Fetzer Center.

Kalamazoo River oil spill: ‘A nightmare in our own backyard’

On Tuesday afternoon, an Enbridge Inc. pipeline malfunctioned, spilling what is estimated to be more than 1 million gallons of oil into a Marshall-area creek that has now reached the Kalamazoo River.

First of three candidates for Bernhard Center director speaks to students

Candidate for the new Bernhard Center director, Julia Wingard, has respect for what student’s wants and needs are as the Bernhard Center transitions into a new era.

Wingard engaged the student body during her speech on Monday, July 26, in the South Ballroom of the Bernhard Center. She knows that researching the changes students want to see to in the Bernhard Center will create the ideal student center.

Panel of experts discuss energy policy at Fetzer Center

WMU golfers compete at Annual Michigan tournament

Western Michigan University has two out of the top three golfers at the 94th Annual Michigan Women’s Amateur Tournament at the St. Clair River Country Club.

Britney Hamilton paced the field with a 4-under par round of 68. Teammate Stephanie Koske is tied for third after scoring 74 in the first round.

WMU should provide a booklet of useful links for students on campus

When looking at the Western Michigan University website, it makes me wonder why there isn’t a comprehensive link or booklet that lists useful resources for students within different departments.

Most universities provide their students with a link or a booklet on the useful websites that help the students explore the main concepts in their majors.

The man behind McCracken Hall

Since then, it was renovated in the late 1960’s and in 1983, and now most of the classes that it once held have moved to newer buildings.

Firehouse to re-open in August

A chemical fire broke out at The Firehouse Bar and Grill last summer due to the intense heat in the kitchen igniting a newly refinished floor.

“No one was hurt but there was extensive damage to the interior of the building,” said Lt. Stacey Randolph of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

WMU gymnastics earns honors in the classroom

Sporting a 3.6323 grade point average, Western Michigan University placed fourth in the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women 2010 Academic Team Rankings.Out of a total of 15 members, four Broncos recorded a 4.0 and 11 others had GPA’s of 3.5 or better and each earned individual honors.In order to earn an individual honor, a student-athlete must receive at least a 3.50 GPA.

Lawson agrees to play in Germany

Former Western Michigan University men’s basketball center Donald Lawson has signed a contract to play in Germany next season for Chemnitz.

Chemnitz also signed former Bronco Stane Bufford last season. Bufford has experienced some success, averaging 14.6 points, 3.6 rebounds. 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals. He was also named to the Bundesliga Pro A All-Defensive Team.

Board of Trustees vote to increase tuition at WMU

The Western Michigan University Board of Trustees voted Friday to increase tuition by 7.4 percent, starting this fall.

University officials recommended that the board make the tuition increase during the Board of Trustees’ meeting at WMU’s Bernhard Center.
