By Adam Bouton Western Herald Even a bloody nose halfway during the first set couldn’t prevent sophomore Michael Calderone from rolling to a straight sets victory. Calderone said that the bloody nose helped calm him down and propel him to the win. “I think it relaxed me a little bit,” he said following the conclusion [...]

For the Bronco football team, recruiting is mainly spent on filling holes in certain positions, like tight end, wide receiver and the defensive backfield. “Some guys are going to have to play,” head coach Bill Cubit said. “We’ll [...]

By Mark Rudi Western Herald For Western Michigan University athletes, the offseason can be just as important as the season itself. Bronco athletes must stay in shape and work on their skills to get ready for the upcoming year and due to NCAA rules, all without their coaches. For the WMU football team, the players [...]

When I first set foot onto Western Michigan University’s campus in the fall of 2002, I was a self-proclaimed sports nut. Not much has changed since then, but I am now an even bigger sports nut thanks to Bronco athletics. I’ve witnessed some great sports teams, more than a few gifted athletes and several terrific [...]

When I stepped on Western Michigan University’s campus for the first time four years ago, I joined a school with a lackluster athletic tradition that seemed to be in a complete reconstruction. Football head coach Bill Cubit was in his first year following WMU’s 1-10 season that left the team in shambles. Men’s basketball had [...]

By Scott Sierzenga Western Herald Wind was blowing out and tempers rose, which didn’t make for a good combination in baseball. A recently struggling Western Michigan University (10-24, 5-10 Mid-American Conference) was pushed to the limits by Eastern Michigan University (11-27, 5-10 MAC) after a weekend of flaring tempers. This led to ejections and caused [...]

By Evan Riddell Western Herald After 40 years of thinly veiled morality tales, techno-babble and a sunny outlook on the future, “Star Trek” joins the long list of series reboots to hit theaters. Given Hollywood’s penchant for completely revamping classics with mixed results, the franchise’s notoriously rabid fans knew this could go the way of [...]

By Koty Neelis Western Herald If you’re like me, typing the words “Limp Bizkit comeback” into a Google search engine can be slightly nauseating. Bands like No Doubt, Jane’s Addiction, Blink 182 and others will be either touring this summer or working on a new album. As a kid who grew up in the ’90s [...]

The editorial board has looked back, our academic year completed. 2008-09 was a little wack, mixed with heavy topics and events. We began with election candidates and November gong show festivities. Kalamazoo’s Tax Day Tea Party
Sarah Randall / Western Herald
Protesters gather in front of the Federal Building in downtown Kalamazoo on “tax day” Wednesday to take part in the Kalamazoo Tea Party. Similar protests took place statewide Wednesday as supporters of the proposed Michigan Fair Tax took to the streets to draw support. The Michigan Fair Tax plan would replace all federal income and payroll based taxes in Michigan with a national retail sales tax and could make this the last “tax day” in our state’s history.
