The Downbeat by Chris Kato

It takes a heartless man to root against Mickey Rourke on Oscar night, but on Sunday, I was that man. Don’t get me wrong, I loved “The Wrestler.” Rourke was downright brilliant as Randy ‘‘the Ram” Robinson, the washed-up professional wrestler living in a trailer and throwing his busted body around high school gymnasiums and [...]

Take a break, have a drink

As you read this, I’m on my way to sunny Florida to forget about my hectic life at Western by relaxing near the ocean. My Grandma, who is playing hostess for the week, has already baked my favorite cookies (molasses) and stocked up on Diet Coke to prepare for my visit. When we’re not reading [...]

Modern Life: Hollywood Heads Here

A friend and I were viewing Oscar winners through the veil of a television set on Sunday night, fantasizing about what it would be like to sport a custom-made dress like Marisa Tomei’s and stun foes of our past (e.g: “Remember when you didn’t cast me as lead in the high school play? Take that!”). [...]

Game Brain: New technology, same old problems

Forty years ago, the United States put the first human beings on the moon. If you consider all the money, failures, man-hours and material that went into it, you might wonder why we even went through all the trouble.
